Island Beach Access (aka IBA) is a charitable organization whose Mission is to identify, enhance and preserve beach access on Whidbey Island for current and further generations while respecting both public and private interests. We welcome your questions, concerns, and support!

OUR GOALS

Determining the boundaries of public and private shorelines is one of the most perplexing problems for beach-walkers and boaters alike. Existing signs are often not helpful or are misleading. We are working to resolve these issues.

Our Goals:

Improve water-side access points for boaters and kayakers.
Establish another waterfront accessibility point for mobility impaired persons.
Clarify signage for public and private beach access for more beaches on both sides of South/Central Whidbey.

Accomplishments

In 2017: After a long and costly legal battle, we secured permanent public access to Wonn Road on the East side of Greenbank. This is a great launch site for kayakers.

In 2016-17: We worked with the Port of South Whidbey to make Clinton Beach Park truly accessible for our mobility-impaired citizens.

In 2016-17: We worked with the SW Port Commission and Island County to remove barriers to public access to 3 major beaches: Shore Meadow Road, Robinson Beach, and Marissa Lane.

In 2018-19: We focused on improving access and signage on other beaches on South Whidbey, including Deer Lagoon, Sunlight, Robinson, and Clinton Park.

As a resident of Island County, IBA welcomes your participation in the enjoyment of our shorelines as well as in the process of expanding our knowledge of these resources and any problems associated with maintaining our legal public property rights. It's an investment in everyone's future.

We hear a lot about private property rights, but (especially along our shorelines) not so much about our public property rights. IBA intends to change that – encouraging an appropriate balance of public and private rights and interests based solidly on precise interpretations of the laws and regulations on the books and legal agreements describing correct applications of those laws and regulations.

The effectiveness of IBA depends on the participation of the at-large public in pursuing its own legal rights and interests in this area. We invite you to join us!
